Joanne grew up in Balerno and now lives in Kirknewton (on the border between Edinburgh and West Lothian) with her husband Niall and their 5 rescue dogs. Lily, Krumble and Ginny the cocker spaniels plus Arwen and Lyra the hairy lurchers.
Joanne is currently completing a degree in Canine Behaviour & Training at Bishop Burton College (accredited by the University of Hull) and is a provisional member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors. She plans to achieve the highest standard possible for behaviour counsellors by applying for CCAB (clinical companion animal behaviourist) status upon the completion of her degree. Please see the consultations page for more information on what this entails.
Joanne has been a dog daycare manager and petsitter for the last 5 years. Previous to this she completed a degree in Animal Care from Aberdeen University. Joanne has spent many hours over the last decade doing voluntary work with various animal organisations such as the Scottish SPCA. During her gapyear she worked at a wildlife rescue centre handrearing kangaroos and also helped at a safari park in Australia. She has fostered dozens of dogs for various UK breed rescues and also volunteers to help with homechecks and dog assessments for these rescues. To add to her skills Joanne has attended variousshort courses including a canine first aid workshop and a dog grooming class at Oatridge College in West Lothian. She regularly attends seminars and workshops on dog related topics all across the UK.
Dogs are her passion in life and in particular rescue dogs from traumatic backgrounds. Her goal in life is to educate people on how to better understand their canine companions and to help owners having issues to learn the skills needed to change their dogs' behaviour. There is no magic to understanding or training dogs but it takes time to learn how dogs think, how they communicate and how to put this knowledge into practice.
Lily the show type cocker spaniel came to us at 11 months old with severe guarding issues and a variety of anxiety related behaviours. She taught me more about working with problem dogs than any book ever could! Now 5 years old she is still a funny wee thing but has learnt how to trust, how to cope with stress effectively and a wide variety of totally useless tricks. She's still a nutcase though!
Krumble the working cocker boy was rehomed at 15 months due to chasing sheep. He is very intelligent and has been a joy to train and can now walk past any livestock safely. Krumble is aiming to get his grade 3 gundog certificate in 2012.
Arwen joined the family as a 4 month old pup in Feb 2008 and is as close as it gets to the perfect pet dog. She never ceases to make us smile with her loopy lurcher antics. Arwens favourite pastime is pinching slippers.....
Lyra arrived as a foster dog with LurcherLink over 3 years ago but within a week became a permanent resident. She has a zest for life unmatched by any other dog which is great for our busy lifestyle but gives us trouble when it comes to her hunting drive!
Ginny is our newest recruit and is a deaf 11 yr old ex breeding bitch working cocker from a puppy farming background. She has now learned that life can be enjoyable and is a devoted fan of home comforts. We have taught her hand signals for basic cue's such as sit, stay and come. This is one old dog who can definitely learn new tricks.
